Denville Police Department Social Media Guidelines

The Denville Township Police Department maintains multiple social media sites with the purpose of disseminating to Township residents, visitors and employees Denville-related information, such as details regarding ongoing police activity or road closures, upcoming special events, and other time-sensitive information.  These sites, which include but are not limited to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, are not to be used for official communications with the Township (these sites are not monitored 24/7). Opinions expressed by users, except expressly noted, may not represent the official position or policy of the Township.

The following terms of use govern all content posted on the Department’s authorized social media sites.

Prohibited Content:
- Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of age, race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, marital status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, nationality, sex or status with regard to public assistance.
- Content containing defamatory statements, or any material contained in it, that holds an individual or groups of people up to public ridicule, derision or embarrassment, or is libelous.
- Content containing profane, obscene, violent, or pornographic content and/or language, or sexually suggestive or explicit content or links to such materials.
- Content containing vulgar, offensive, threatening or harassing language, personal attacks or accusations.
- Content that violates or promotes the violation of any federal, state or local law.
- Content advocating or opposing personal beliefs or causes unrelated to the purpose of the Township’s social media presence, as stated above.
- Content disclosing personal information of a person other than the poster, such as names, addresses and phone numbers, no matter how easily obtained elsewhere.
- Spam or commercial promotions; content containing any unsolicited or unauthorized advertisement or solicitation.
- Content that contains links to malicious software (malware) such as viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, spyware, adware or any other unwanted software.
- Content that contains Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public or jeopardize any ongoing investigations.
- Content that violates a legal ownership interest, such as a copyright, of any party.  The Department will remove any and all content and submissions if properly notified that such content and/or submission infringes on another’s intellectual property rights.

The Denville Township Police Department reserves the right to restrict or remove any comments, messages or postings containing any of the aforementioned prohibited content from our social media sites, subject to applicable archiving and retention requirements.  In addition, the Denville Township Police Department reserves the right to block and/or bar any person or account from access to the Department’s social media accounts for repetitive violations of posting prohibited content.
